Sailors Fail Compulsory Drugs Test (CDT)

A report today in the Mail on Sunday claims that three sailors serving on a British naval submarine, HMS Vengeance, have failed Compulsory Drugs Test (CDT) by testing positive for cocaine.

The sailors were found to have failed a urine drug test for the Class A substance, shortly after arriving at a military base in Florida. On return to the ship’s naval base in Scotland, the three were removed from the vessel.

Military sources have suggested to the newspaper that the three sailors may be part of a bigger group of service personnel who took the drug a recent trip ashore.

How Does a Urine Drug Test for Cocaine Work?

When a urine drug test for cocaine is taken, the test is actually testing for Benzoylecgonine, which is the main metabolite of cocaine. Screening for benzoylecgonine with a urine drug test kit will determine recent usage of Cocaine.

What is a Compulsory Drugs Test (CDT)?

The British Military’s CDT programme is a two-part screening and confirmatory process. Illegal drugs, as defined by the under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 (MDA 1971) are screened for at both screening and confirmation stages in the CDT process.

In 2017, the BBC reported an increase in the number of military personnel failing the Compulsory Drugs Test. A freedom of information requested revealed an increase in the numbers failing the test, from 80 in 2012/13 to 110 in 2016/17.

The military in the country has always maintained a zero-tolerance attitude towards drug taking within the service. Any personnel found to be taking drugs face the threat of discharge from the service, under military rules. In a tiny number of exceptional circumstances, where an out of character mistake is made by a young military person, second chances can be considered. However, this only occurs happen if Commanding Officer is of the opinion that the individual meets certain, pre-stipulated retention criteria.
