What Does This Drink Spike Test Detect?

This kit screens for benzodiazepines. These are sedative medicines that include flunitrazepam, which is widely known as Rohypnol.

It is important to understand that not every substance associated with drink spiking is a benzodiazepine. A negative benzodiazepine result therefore does not prove that a drink has not been tampered with or that another substance is not present.

How To Test A Drink

1. Remove one test from its sealed foil pouch only when you are ready to use it.
2. Remove the protective cap at the bottom of the test to expose the absorbent strip. Do not touch the absorbent area.
3. Place the absorbent strip into the suspect drink for approximately 5 to 10 seconds. Keep the liquid below the plastic body of the test.
4. Remove the test from the drink and replace the protective cap.
5. Place the test on a clean, flat surface while the lines develop.
6. Check the result within the stated reading period. A result may appear quickly, but allow up to 5 minutes where necessary and do not interpret the test after 10 minutes.

The test is suitable for drinks including wine, beer, mixers, soft drinks and alcopops. The existing product instructions state that it should not be used with neat spirits such as whisky or vodka.

How To Test A Urine Sample

1. Collect a urine sample in a clean container.
2. Open the foil pouch and remove the test.
3. Remove the protective cap without touching the absorbent strip.
4. Dip only the absorbent section into the urine for approximately 5 to 10 seconds. Do not allow the urine to reach the plastic test casing.
5. Remove the test, replace the protective cap and lay it on a flat surface.
6. Allow the result lines to develop and interpret the test within 10 minutes.

Results Explained

The test window is marked with a C for the control line and a T for the test line.

Negative Result

Two coloured lines appear, one at C and one at T. The test line may be faint and should still be treated as a negative result if it is visible.

Positive Result

One coloured line appears at C, with no line at T. This indicates that the sample has screened positive for benzodiazepines.

Invalid Result

If no control line appears at C, the result is invalid and should not be interpreted. Use a new test.

What Should I Do If I Suspect Drink Spiking?

If you think your drink may have been tampered with, do not continue drinking it. Tell someone you trust, venue staff or security and move to a safe place.

If you begin to feel unexpectedly intoxicated, confused, unwell, unusually sleepy or otherwise different from how you would expect to feel after the amount you have consumed, seek help rather than relying solely on the result of a home screening test.

A positive result is a screening result and should not be regarded as definitive proof of which substance was present or who may have added it. Likewise, a negative result only relates to the substances detected by this particular test.
